Inauguration Of HH Has Inspired Opposition Leaders Across Africa
The inauguration of Hakainde Hichilema on Tuesday has inspired opposition leaders across Africa to work hard at the possibility of one day coming in to power themselves.
In response to Mr Hichilema’s win in the 2021 Zambian general election, a number of opposition leaders around the country have spoken out at the hope and inspiration which it has given them.
“It’s massively inspirational” said Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu.
“Zambians have showed us it can be done, no matter what they put us through, no matter the odds,” he added.
The ripple effect of the hope which Mr Hichilema’s win has brought has also spread to neighbouring Zimbabwe.
“Zimbabwe you are next,” Zimbabwean opposition leader Nelson Chamisa Tweeted.
However, the Tweet was retorted by President Emmerson Mnagangwa who said that “What happened in Zambia will not happen here.”
Nonetheless, Mr Hichilema’s win was a win for democracy across the continent, according to MDC-Alliance spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere.
“The fight for democracy can be won, people can get together to remove a dictatorship,” she said.
In Kenya, Raila Odinga is also preparing to run for presidency for the fifth time in 2022 and is also inspired by Mr Hichilema’s win.
He said that an opposition win in Zambia “reminds fellow Africans elsewhere that nothing is impossible.”
Mr Hichilema is set to be inaugurated today, Tuesday 24th August 2021, following his landslide victory in the general elections.
