Women Encouraged To Join Politics By Nalumango
Vice President Mutale Nalumango has called upon women to rise up and join politics in a bid to increase the number of females representing constituencies across the country.
Speaking to the Commonwealth Secretary General Patricia Scotland on Thursday, the Vice President expressed her disappointment at the low number of women who participated in the August 2021 general elections. Ms Nalumango believed that it was a result of violence and the subsequent presence of a hostile environment within the country that deterred women to become involved in the electoral process.
Nalumango cited that only one UPND parliamentary candidate was female, with no female candidates present in Northern Province.
In a bid to prevent this from happening in future, Nalumango has invited women to rise to the occasion and participate in politics, to take the role as a leaders in the country.
Ms Scotland subsequently congratulated Nalumango for ascending to the role of Vice President, being only the second female Vice President that the country has ever seen. She also pledged support from the Commonwealth to the new Zambian government, assuring of a strong partnership in the promotion and attainment of gender parity across sectors.
