President HH Takes Steps To Remove Death Penalty

President Hakainde Hichilema has announced his plans to abolish the death penalty in Zambia.

He described the move as a “big decision,” outlining that his government would work in tandem to move the law away from capital punishment and towards “preservation, rehabilitation of life.”

The policy marks a major step forward in securing human rights whilst maintaining justice.

Zambia is one of only 55 countries that have capital punishment, however, no executions have taken place since the late 1990s.

The announcement came today on the eve of Africa Freedom Day.

The president said, “This is important. We believe in it. Africa Freedom Day is a symbol of our collective commitment to secure a better future for all.”
