Freedom Fighters Awarded For Service By President
Ten freedom fighters have been awarded for their service by President Hakainde Hichilema.
David Suuba, Obed Kachenga and Kenneth Kiyaba were awarded the president’s Medal for Gallantry for their peacekeeping mission in Sierra Leon.
Meanwhile, Mercy Changwe was awarded for fearlessly defending democracy.
Malina Makhubalo and Violet Simwanza were awarded the Order of the Grand Companion of Freedom. They were presented with the award due to their decision to join the United National Independence Party (UNIP) in the fight for liberation within Zambia following their expulsion from school.
The president also awarded Ackim Sakala the Order of Distinguished Service for his dedication to the civil service over the course of his 38-year long career.
Mr Sakala expressed his gratitude by saying, “I feel so honoured to be recognized for my service provision in government.”
Further, Mama Doreen Malambo was also honoured for her commitment to promoting gender equality in the police department. Stephen Chan was also awarded for his commitment to encouraging karate in Zambia. Both were bestowed the president’s Insignia of Meritorious Achievement.
Chieftainess Waitwika, a traditional leader, was bestowed the president’s Insignia of Honour for her contributions to ending youth pregnancies, gender-based violence and child marriages. She was also awarded for her fight against poverty within her chiefdom.
The Chieftainess said she was delighted that she had been recognised by the president. She also urged other traditional leaders to foster growth in their agricultural activities to encourage social development through job creation and income generation in order to eradicate poverty.
