Stop Spying on Spouses’ Phones, Urges Zambian President

President of Zambia Hakainde Hichilema has urged his fellow countrymen to stop checking on the phones of spouses.

The plea has come as part of an effort to address rising divorce rates in the country, after more than 22,000 divorce cases were recorded in Zambia last year. President Hichilema described these statistics as “unfortunate”.

Mr. Hichilema added, “We marry for love, we don’t marry to go and check each other out, or to go and point a finger”. The President was speaking to local outlets while hosting a local monarch, elaborating that “Freedom means responsibility to limit our freedom, not to tamper with the freedom of others. Be tolerant, be understanding.”

Statistics for 2022 showed that the short marriage of the year was 30 days, and the longest 65 years.
