Government Announces Plans To Increase Access To Electricity And Reduce Fuel Prices

Zambia's Minister of Energy,  Hon. Eng. Peter C. Kapala, has announced plans to increase access to electricity and reduce fuel prices in the country.

Speaking at a press conference, the minister stated that the government aims to provide electricity to 80% of the population by 2025, up from the current rate of 29%. 

He highlighted the importance of access to electricity for economic development and stated that the government is committed to increasing access to electricity in rural areas.

The minister also announced plans to reduce fuel prices by introducing measures to promote competition in the petroleum sector. He stated that the government would review the pricing model for fuel and ensure that it reflects market conditions.

The minister emphasised the need for fair competition in the petroleum sector and stated that the government would take action against companies that engage in anti-competitive practices.

In addition to these measures, the minister stated that the government would continue to invest in renewable energy and increase the share of renewable energy in the country's energy mix.

He highlighted the potential for solar energy to provide affordable and reliable electricity in rural areas and stated that the government would prioritize investments in solar energy projects.
