President Hichilema Offers Condolences After Road Accident Deaths
President Hakainde Hichilema has offered his condolences to the families of the victims of devastating road traffic accident that claimed the lives of 25 people on the Chirundu-Lusaka road.
The tragic accident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, was a result of the bus carrying the victims careering off the road and plunging into a gorge.
The victims were all members of the New Apostolic Church in Chongwe District, Lusaka Province. They had been traveling to a church gathering in Siavonga District.
In a statement posted to his Facebook page, Hichilema said he was “deeply shocked and saddened” by the news. He asked for all citizens “to join us in praying for the swift recovery of those who survived this terrible accident and extend out heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased”.
The president then urged authorities to take swift action in improving road safety in order to prevent tragedies such as these from happening again.
There were 11 survivors following the accident, all of whom have been evacuated by the government to University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka.
