President Hichilema is Visiting Ukraine and Russia on a Peace Mission

As part of the African Peace Initiative, President Hakainde Hichilema has joined with six other heads of state on an official visit to Russia and Ukraine as part of the African Peace Initiative.

There, he will be meeting with both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin with the aim of promoting dialogue and peaceful negotiations between the two nations.

The trip was announced by Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Stanley Kakubo. He highlighted the African Peace Initiative’s successful track record of resolving conflicts through dialogue and peace-building.

In a statement posted to his Facebook page, Hichilema said that Zambia was “deeply committed to global peace”, describing it as “the cornerstone of socio-economic development”. He said the purpose of the mission was to “encourage dialogue and peaceful resolution of the conflict between the two nations”.

On Friday the president was in Ukraine, where he toured Kyiv and met with President Zelensky. Hichilema thanked the Ukrainian president and the people of Ukraine for their graciousness under such difficult conditions.

Tomorrow, the group with proceed to Russia to meet with Putin.

The trip is led by South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, and includes the heads of state of Comoros, Congo Brazzaville, Egypt, Senegal, and Uganda.
