HH: Traditional ceremonies key to national unity

President Hakainde Hichilema has emphasised that traditional ceremonies play a vital role in fostering national unity, aligning with his administration's commitment to peace and stability.

Speaking at the annual Ichibwela Mushi traditional ceremony of the Lala and Swaka peoples in Mkushi district, President Hichilema reaffirmed his government's continued support for cultural celebrations as a means of strengthening diversity.

In a statement posted to his Facebook page, the President said, “Our government remains committed to recognizing all traditional ceremonies across Zambia equally—without labelling any as major or minor.”

He added, “These ceremonies are vital expressions of our unity, peace, and harmony, reflecting our shared vision of ‘One Zambia, One Nation.’"

The President highlighted his administration's focus on agricultural development, announcing that the construction of Mkushi Dam would proceed to bolster farming activities in the region. He confirmed that his earlier directive to provide farming inputs to traditional leaders would become a permanent initiative.

Central Province Minister Mwabashike Nkulukusa echoed these sentiments, emphasising the importance of traditional ceremonies in promoting peace and prosperity.

During the ceremony, Organising Committee Chairman Benny Musonda called for better regulation of mining activities in Central Province to ensure local communities benefit from mineral resources. He acknowledged the President's personal contribution of 100,000 kwacha, 100 bags of mealie meal, and five animals to support the event.

The event was attended by both opposition and ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) MPs.
