UPND Dominates in Lukanga Ward By-election

The governing United Party for National Democracy (UPND) has taken first place in the Lukanga Ward by-election held on Monday November 4, 2024.

The party’s candidate Clement Sikifanso secured a total of 385 votes, more than 200 more than the second place independent candidate George Kabaki. Meanwhile, Citizens First (CF) candidate Furnwell Musonda came third with 77 votes and the Socialist Party’s (SP) John Kalunga finished in last with 36 votes. The Patriotic Front did not contest the election, which took place at Neemtree Primary School from 06:00 hours.

The official results were announced at 20:40 hours by returning officer Fredah Chisale who highlighted the peaceful nature of the vote. A total of 10 ballot papers were rejected as invalid and a total of 692 votes were cast.

Mr. Sikifanso will now take over from the former councilor Sibanze Belemu, who lost his seat after he was sentenced to nine months imprisonment after being found guilty of the theft of building materials by the Kabwe Magistrate’s Court earlier this year.

Speaking on his victory Mr. Sikifanso thanked voters and said he intended to focus on delivering necessary improvements for the area including roads and drainage.
