Government launches National Public Free WiFi initiative

The government has officially launched the ZamFree National Public Free WiFi initiative, aimed at expanding digital access and empowering citizens across the country.

The launch took place simultaneously at three key public locations: Lusaka's Intercity Bus Terminus, Kapiri-Mposhi Bus Station, and Kitwe's Chisokone Market.

Minister of Technology and Science Felix Mutati highlighted the initiative's significance, describing it as "a commitment to bridging the digital divide."

The minister noted specific benefits for key demographic groups, particularly marketeers and travellers. "This initiative provides access to online marketplaces, financial services, and business growth tools," he said.

Kusobile Kamwambi, Head of the Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU), positioned the programme as part of Zambia's broader national development strategy. She highlighted the Eighth National Development Plan's target of 80% internet penetration by 2026.

"Our goal is to connect and empower 80% of Zambians with digital access and literacy, enabling 20% to actively participate in the digital economy," Kamwambi explained.

The ZamFree initiative aligns with President Hakainde Hichilema's vision of transforming Zambia into a prosperous, competitive middle-income economy by 2030.
