Zambia-Finland Partnership to Advance Sustainable Development

President Hakainde Hichilema addressed the urgent need to identify and map underground water resources during a meeting with a delegation of Finnish Members of Parliament at State House yesterday.

Acknowledging Zambia's struggle with drought and its impact on crop yields, President Hichilema spoke of the importance of utilising groundwater for sustainable irrigation programs to ensure food security for the nation. He expressed Zambia's intention to collaborate with Finland to leverage their proficiency in geological mapping.

President Hichilema also advocated strengthened development cooperation between Zambia and Finland to drive economic growth, recognising Finland's expertise across various sectors in Zambia, including mining, agriculture, water, and forestry. Finland has already invested K282,794,268 to strengthen small- and medium-sized enterprises in Zambia.

The President also called for expedited action in developing a common checklist for agreed-upon areas between Zambia and Finland to facilitate cooperation between governments as well as businesses to promote investments and trade for economic advancement.

Krista Mikkonen, leader of the Finnish delegation and MP for the Green League, spoke of the growing interest of the Finnish private sector in Zambia, particularly in sustainable mining, forestry, meteorology, and education. She also expressed optimism regarding Zambia's economic potential once debt restructuring issues are addressed.

Technology and Science Minister Felix Mutati revealed plans for exchange programmes between Zambia and Finnish universities to foster skills development. The HAUS Finnish Institute for Public Management have pledged their support with plans to send technology and science experts to Zambia for capacity building and skills transfer over a one-year period. This exchange aims to enhance technological and scientific capabilities of Zambia through meaningful collaboration with Finnish institutions.
