Government Officials Advocate Media Self-Regulation

Government officials have shown support for media self-regulation to uphold the country’s democratic principles.

Cornelius Mweetwa, the Information and Media Minister, said this during a meeting with representatives from the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA).

Mweetwa reiterated the government's commitment to safeguarding journalists' freedom, ensuring they can work without fear of intimidation or interference. He also commended MISA for its efforts in advocating for media freedom and upholding professional standards within the industry.

MISA Chairperson Lorraine Mwanza lauded the government's initiatives aimed at promoting a free media environment, including providing tax waivers for broadcasting equipment.

Kennedy Mambwe, Chairperson of the Media Self-Regulation Council of Zambia, thanked the government for its efforts, highlighting the importance of maintaining accountability and transparency within the media.

Chairperson of the Media Ethics Complaints Committee, Sam Mujuda, said that the committee would work to address media-related concerns to improve accountability and professionalism.

The discussions are part of ongoing efforts to ensure a conducive environment for media freedom and journalism in the country.
