VP Calls on Youth to Maintain Peace

Young political leaders from Zambia and the wider region have gathered in Lusaka today at the 2024 Political Party Leadership Institute (PPLI) Regional Symposium.

Among those to address the event were Vice President Mutale Nalumango who took the opportunity to call on young political leaders to maintain peace in the country and reject the politics of violence, hate and insults. In making her appeal the Vice President stressed the importance of peace in underpinning development and reminded those gathered that politics must be a selfless venture that is grounded in service.

Sharing an update on the event on social media the Vice President wrote, “Early this morning, we had the privilege to interact and get inspired by the young people from Kenya, Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique among other African countries who attended the 2024 PPLI Regional Symposium Agenda.”

The event, which has been supported by the National Democratic Institute (NDI) since 2020, brings together youth in Southern and East Africa (SEA) to enhance political participation. The PPLI program provides training support and mentoring assistance to young political party members to enhance the capacity and to implement  self-initiated projects that position them to contribute to formal political party processes effectively.

The NDI acting Regional Director for Southern and East Africa, Gemima Barlow also addressed the event, speaking of the need to amplify youth visibility and agency. Ms. Barlow noted the critical importance of young people being seen and included as active participants in the democracy and development processes.
