HH: Mozambique’s political insecurity is “hindering regional trade”

President Hakainde Hichilema has described the Mozambique’s current political instability as “not only affecting the people of Mozambique but also hindering regional trade in critical sectors like energy and transport.”

The President made these comments following the SADC Organ Troika’s extraordinary Summit Plus, called to address Mozambique's deteriorating political situation following its recent elections.

President Hakainde Hichilema, as the SADC Organ Troika Chair, described the ongoing insecurity in Mozambique as having “far-reaching consequences” for the region, in particular Zambia.

Also present at the emergency summit, held virtually, was SADC’s Executive Secretary and Botswana national HE Elias Magosi and President of Tanzania Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Reflecting on the meeting on behalf of its attendees, President Hichilema said, “As members of the SADC community, we firmly support interventions aimed at restoring peace and stability in Mozambique.”

According the President, “The notion that ‘instability anywhere is instability everywhere’ resonates deeply, and we recognize the importance of collective action in promoting regional security and cooperation.”

The SADC members reaffirmed their commitment to restoring peace in Mozambique, citing the body’s previous successes in promoting democracy and peace in the region.
