President HH Meets with Families Affected by Flooding

President Hichilema received a warm welcome as he visited flood-affected areas of Lusaka this afternoon, offering his condolences and sympathies to families who have lost loved ones or have been displaced due to the recent flooding.

Hichilema explained that he was committed to boldly addressing the floods, which resulted from decades of poor urban planning by local authorities.

The President announced that the government will relocate and compensate residents who have built on waterways which cover the drainage system.

“This is one of the easiest ways to address the floods because many houses have been constructed on waterways, which block the smooth flow of water,” said the President on Facebook earlier today.

Hichilema has also called for an emergency meeting with all relevant government departments to find alternative homes for those who have been left homeless due to the recent floods.

Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane confirmed that resources will be made available to ensure that all Presidential directives are followed as quickly as possible.

According to Lusaka Province Minister Sheal Mulyata, engineers will remain on the ground to conduct surveys and ensure the protection of every citizen.

“We urge fellow political leaders to join us, putting aside politics for the sake of our people,” the President concluded.
