HH Announces Construction of New Solar Power Plant in Monze
President Hichilema demonstrated last week his commitment to undertaking ambitious infrastructure projects, by announcing the construction of a solar power plant in Monze, Southern Province. The installation will have a capacity of 5 megawatts of electricity and will supply the Chikuni and Rusangu Missions, as well as nearby communities.
This is a welcome investment that will carry several benefits; it will create many jobs in the region, expand Zambia’s renewable energy sector, and reduce overreliance on hydroelectric power, which was brutally exposed during last year’s drought, particularly affecting Southern Province.
The President also unveiled plans to revitalise Chikuni Mission’s economic growth through investment in the agricultural sector. He announced an initial donation of ten heifer cows and one bull to Chikuni Ranch, and committed his government to providing a further 90 cattle within the next month, alongside general infrastructural support.
At the same event, Monze Central Member of Parliament, Jack Mwiimbu, called upon his constituents to unite behind the UPND at next year’s elections.
It is hoped that this investment into Monze will shore up both its food and energy security, leaving it much better placed to navigate the consequences of climate change.
