President Hichilema Stresses Media’s Role in Strengthening Democracy

President Hichilema has reaffirmed the crucial role of the media in upholding democracy during a meeting with representatives from Deutsche Welle (DW), Germany’s state-owned international broadcaster. Led by DW’s Managing Director, Carsten von Nahmen, the discussion focused on the evolving landscape of journalism, particularly the growing influence of digital media and public reporting.

Hichilema underscored the media’s function as the Fourth Estate, essential for maintaining the integrity of information distribution. “As a pillar of democracy, the media is essential in informing, educating, and entertaining the public,” President Hichilema said. “Beyond its traditional role, the media fosters development by equipping citizens with accurate and credible information necessary for informed decision-making.”

With the rise of social media and alternative news sources, Hichilema stressed the need for traditional media to protect the truth and fight misinformation. He commended DW for its commitment to independent journalism in Zambia, highlighting its role in promoting accountability and transparency.

Additionally, the President invited DW to showcase Zambia as a prime investment destination, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to fostering a business-friendly environment. “Zambia is open for business,” he affirmed, emphasising the country’s readiness to attract foreign direct investment and leverage DW’s platform to highlight its economic potential.
