Democratic Party Endorses Government’s Constitutional Reforms; Says They will Make Zambia More Equitable
The leadership of the Democratic Party has endorsed elements of the government’s planned constitutional reforms. They believe the reforms will enhance development and strengthen the electoral process.
Speaking at a press conference earlier this week, party leader Judith Nkonge, highlighted the benefits of enforcing constitutional mandates for the parliamentary representation of marginalised groups such as youths, women, and the disabled.
“One of the benefits if this amendment goes through before the 2026 general election, is that we are certain, for sure, that come 2026 after August, whoever will be President of the Republic of Zambia shall nominate more women. We will not need to wait for another five years”, she said.
The Democratic Party’s leadership also expressed support for the government’s plan to ensure that elections are not cancelled in the event of a candidate’s withdrawal. This would save both time and money, and minimise opportunities for corruption.
Moreover, Ms Nkonge also urged Zambians to consider all the proposals on their own merits, rather than viewing them through a political lens. She noted that it is a shame that many parties and activists who would otherwise support progressive reforms, oppose them for political reasons and see it as an opportunity to fight the government.
This important development signifies that the government’s proposals have a wide and bipartisan appeal. Such widespread support will be essential, given that the amendment process is long and arduous.
