Zambian Students Welcome Proposed Constitutional Amendments
Student leaders from various institutions of higher learning have expressed strong support for the proposed constitutional amendments, praising them as progressive steps toward empowering the youth and strengthening democratic governance.
Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka, Chalimbana University Student President Ezra Chilufya encouraged young people to look beyond political noise and consider the tangible benefits of the reforms. He highlighted the amendment of Article 47, which seeks to guarantee greater representation of women in Parliament and strategic government positions. The amendment is a positive move that will help meet the needs of young people and promote inclusive leadership.
Natural Resources Development College (NRDC) Student Union President Ackim Phiri echoed this sentiment, stating that the proposed delimitation of constituencies will ensure more equitable resource allocation. “Many constituencies are currently too large, and not everyone benefits. These changes will make it easier for communities to access funds and support at the grassroots level,” Phiri noted.
Chalimbana University Students Prime Minister Terrence Chafwaya also commended the proposed changes, especially the provision that ministers must vacate office 90 days before elections. He explained that it’s crucial for preventing the misuse of public office during campaigns and will promote transparency.
The students urged their peers and the wider public to view the constitutional amendments as an essential tool for national development and youth empowerment.
