Muzeya to fight SA’s Tenge

World Boxing Council (WBC) silver welterweight champion Lorita Muzeya has secured a fight against South Africa’s Noni Tenge. And Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions (OQBP) director promotions Christopher Malunga has called for amendment to the Zambia Boxing Federation constitution because people are using it to pursue others.

Malunga confirmed the development during a media briefing on Tuesday.

“I am happy to inform you that Lorita will fight a South African boxer, Noni Tenge, and as OQBP we are happy for the boxer. The fight is likely to take place between January and March 2019. We thought for what was best for the boxer,” Malunga said.

Muzeya was initially supposed to fight Malawi’s Ruth Chisale after WBC ordered a rematch of the elimination title match after citing irregularities that saw Muzeya beat the Malawian via unanimous points decision last December. Malunga, however, cautioned Muzeya to take caution as she takes on her opponent saying she had ample experience to knock her out.

“Muzeya was supposed to go for rematch but the other camp has been mute and claiming the boxer is injured and we saw it fit to go for the title fight instead. It’s a big fight and Muzeya must know that she is fighting an experienced boxer,” he said.

And Malunga said some members of the federation were being victimised for being part of professional boxing.

“People are being victimised because they are associating themselves with professional boxing. When we were campaigning, all of us condemned the old constitution which was being used by the Chileshe led executive. People are being victimised. Greetings Kaonga has been dropped (from the position of assistant national team coach) because he seconded Alfred Muwowo on the corner. I don’t think this is the right way to go. He does not even have a letter to start with. What kind of administration is that? You fire someone on social media, really! If we keep doing this, we will not go anywhere in the sport and we will not achieve anything. What we are seeing is very dangerous for the sport. I have raised the issues with the GS. Let’s hope those issues will be tackled as quickly as possible. Some promoters have been called names,” said Malunga.

“I do not want anything from the amateurs but I want to give them my support because that is our foundation. The constitution has to be amended; people must stop victimising each other. I am even told that there is a scheme of witch-hunting with the old federation. No, don’t waste time with those guys, they are out of office; concentrate on raising resources for our national team.”
