Fernando Llorente sends Spurs into Champions League semi-finals
Pep Guardiola lamented Fernando Llorente's winning goal for Tottenham as Manchester City suffered another painful Champions League exit.
After being robbed of a crucial goal against Liverpool last season when VAR could have helped , the referee on Wednesday evening did use the newly-implemented technology to have a look at Llorente's goal but decided that the original decision would stand.
Guardiola , a keen advocate of VAR, suggested that the referee had not seen the right replays when making his decision.
"I support VAR. It is just to see the goal maybe from Llorente is handball," he said.
"From one angle it is handball. From the angle the referee saw it is not so but… I am for fair football, for fair decisions. The referees must be helped sometimes. When it is offside, it is offside. What can I say? I think in the future, and even in the present it will be fair and that is all.
The City manager was asked about a recurring fault in the set-up of his team after another knockout tie where they have shipped goals far more freely than they usually do; they conceded six when they went out to Monaco, five against Liverpool and four against Tottenham.
However, Guardiola instead pointed out the differences between the Tottenham and Liverpool games.
"We don’t concede a lot of goals," he said.
"With VAR last season it would be completely different. Last season is last season, it is the past. The game was completely different there. They had three shots on target and score three goals.
"We made mistakes today for the first two and the quality that Tottenham have. But it doesn’t matter whether its Tottenham or Liverpool, Porto, Ajax, Barcelona - all the teams have quality to do that at that stage.
"But we were honest in the way we played, we tried until the end, the first half the second half, the whole competition and what we have done in these two seasons is incredible, so good, so proud.
"It was an incredible illusion for us to get to the semi-finals because this club only was there once. Tottenham take the victory and go through."
