Chipolopolo Secure First Victory In AFCON Qualifiers

The Zambian national team yesterday beat Botswana 2-1 at Heroes stadium in Lusaka.

Chipolopolo coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic was delighted with the team’s performance.

Having fallen behind after 45 minutes Botswana’s celebrations were short-lived as Chipolopolo captain Lubambo Musonda pounced on a failed clearance by Botswana to weave a pin-point assist for Enock Mwepu who scored the equaliser.

The second goal came from Collins Sikombe in the 66th minute.

The win was the first for the team in Group H of the AFCON qualifiers.

Following the match Micho called on his players not to be carried away by the 2-1 win first leg victory over Botswana. He advised them to focus on being more clinical and improve before the return match on Monday 16th November in Francistown, Botswana.

“We are fully aware where we have been. We were rock bottom now we have three points but now, we simply have no time and space to celebrate,” Micho stated,

“We need to go back to the drawing board to prepare well for Monday (against Botswana) because this match will not mean anything if we do not put a stamp on the final leg on Monday,” he continued.

“I believe in the players we have and I believe with good planning and good tactical approach, we can outfight, out play and out run the opponents in order to fight for the points,” said Micho.

AFCON will take place in Cameron next year.

Meanwhile, Algeria secured a 3-1 win over Zimbabwe at home to remain top of Group H with nine points.
