Dynamos Contest League Closure

Lusaka Dynamos Football Club has appealed to the Football Association of Zambia to overturn its decision to cut short the MTN/FAZ Super League season due to Covid-19. 

With the winners of the league to be decided on Thursday, ninth position Lusaka Dynamos have written to the FAZ demanding that the remaining league matches be played under Covid guidelines. 

“In essence, we call upon the executive committee of FAZ to consider allowing the league to reach its conclusion whilst following health guidelines in line with the COVID-19 ‘new normal.’ We believe that finishing the league and observing health guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health to stem the spread of the virus are not mutually exclusive,” the letter read. 

The Dynamos said finishing the league would be a return to the FAZ’s values of fair play, natural justice and unity of purpose. It criticised the fact that a decision was made without consulting any of the league clubs. 

The club has urged the FAZ to follow the example set by the South African PSL in allowing ongoing seasons to carry on into 2021 once Covid-19 cases have subsided. 

They argue that teams should not be punished for other teams’ negligence towards Covid-19 in allowing cases to bubble up uncontrollably. 

The Super League initially resumed on July 18, following a two month hiatus. However, play was quickly abandoned after several teams reported serious outbreaks of Covid-19 amongst both players and staff. 

Nkana currently top the leaderboard on 50 points, but closely trailed by Forest rangers on 49 points with a game in hand. Green Eagles and NAPSA Stars are both on 48 points.
