African Champions League Final Pushed Back To November

The African Champions League final is now expected to take place on November 6, having been postponed by three weeks by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). 

The semi-finals will take place on the weekends of October 16 and 17, and October 23 and 24. The fixtures will see Raja Casablanca play Zamalek, and Wydad Casablanca take on Al Ahly.   

During a press conference held Thursday CAF also confirmed that the African Nations Championship (CHAN) will still be played in January 2021, with the dates confirmed as 16 January-7 February. It is expected that the 2022 CHAN will follow in January 2023, with Algeria as hosts. 

The next Women’s Africa Cup of Nations is expected to take place in July 2022. Qualifications for the 2021 Nations Cup and 2022 World Cup remain as scheduled and are expected to resume in November 2020 and May 2021 respectively.  

Meanwhile, CAF provided additional details on the organisation’s first Women’s Champions League, which is expected to take place next year. The tournament will feature eight teams, with representation from each of CAF’s six regional zones. The additional two teams will be reserved for the host nation and, in the case of the first tournament, a second team from the same region. In future competitions the eighth team will be drawn from the same zone as the defending champions. 

CAF has also announced that the body’s upcoming presidential elections will take place in March 2021 in Rabat, Morocco. Nominations for the presidency and executive committee positions open today. Incumbent president Ahmad is yet to confirm whether he will run for another term.
