Mwepu Scores Screamer Against Childhood Team Liverpool

Boyhood Liverpool fan and Chipolopolo ace Enock Mwepu described scoring at Anfield as “an unbelievable feeling.”

The Brighton midfielder, who joined the Seagulls in a £20 million deal this summer, scored a stunning, looping effort from 25 yards that wrong-footed home goalkeeper Alisson.

The goal invigorated Brighton and set them up to come back from two goals down against the in-form Reds to grab a credible draw on Saturday, once Leandro Trossard equalised in the second half.

Mwepu followed Liverpool whilst growing up in Zambia, but this sentimental tie didn’t stop him from taking his chance when he spotted Alisson off his line from the right-hand corner of the penalty area.

“I was almost speechless after the game,” he said in his post-match interview.

“The goal was really amazing, an unbelievable feeling at the end of an amazing week for me. If you play Liverpool and you score that goal, who wouldn’t be really happy?”

‘An amazing week’ seems an apt description by the midfielder, as he opened his account for Albion in the Carabao Cup against Leicester on Wednesday. Meanwhile this goal makes him the second Zambian of all time to score in the Premier League, after Patson Daka’s goal for Leicester last month.

Mwepu added after the game, “I think the way we played showed the spirit in the squad. The gaffer is always trying to give us that motivation, always trying to make sure we give our best.”

Brighton manager Graham Potter echoed these sentiments at full time, and was full of praise for his summer signing.

“It was a wonderful goal and I was really pleased for Enock,” said Potter.

“He gives us a different option in there [central midfield], I thought he did really well against a strong Liverpool midfield.”

Mwepu wasn’t the only Chipolopolo star to enjoy a goal-scoring weekend in the United Kingdom last week.

Fashion Sakala scored a hat-trick for Rangers as they thrashed Motherwell 6-1 in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.

It was a rare start for Sakala in the Glasgow-based side but this man of the match performance should make sure he stays fresh in the mind of manager, and Liverpool legend, Steven Gerrard for future team sheet decisions.
