Mufulira Wanderers on Course for Promotion, Insists Mwila
The General Secretary of Mufulira Wanderers, Mumba Mwila, has insisted that Mighty will secure promotion and return to the Super Division, even though they slipped to third in the table after a loss at the weekend.
Five matches remain in the season, and Mighty will have to turn around their form after Kafue Eagles beat them 2-0 at home last Saturday. After their loss, they were overtaken by Mutondo Stars, dropping to third place, and are eight points behind league leaders Trident who have amassed 56 points in 29 games. Mutondo Stars sit one point above Wanderers’ 48 with 49.
Mwila expects Wanderers to take the maximum 9 points by winning all three matches at home, and 3 points at the least from their two away matches. This, he said, will be enough “to qualify to the Super Division”, as the top four teams in National Division One will be promoted.
When asked about Mighty succumbing to Kafue Eagles, Mwila said, “It was unfortunate that last weekend we were pushed to position three but if you look at the point difference we are within the point tally for qualification. So definitely we are going to qualify.”
Last season, Wanderers missed promotion by just three points. They are the most successful team in Zambia’s history, having won 49 trophies, but have not won a cup since 1997 and have struggled to stay in the Super Division in recent years, last playing in the top league in the 2019/20 season.
