Open Goal: Hauptle Starts Strong in First Copper Queens Training Session

The Copper Queens have started preparations for the upcoming FIFA international friendly matches against Malawi with an intensive training session led by newly appointed head coach Nora Häuptle.

The session at the Toyota Arena marked Häuptle’s first on-pitch engagement with the women’s team since she was named as Bruce Mwape’s replacement.

The former Swiss national team defender was appointed head coach on a three-year contract at the end of January.

To support Häuptle, the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has appointed Swiss national Philippe Hasler as an assistant coach, alongside local coaches Charles Haalubono and Enala Phiri. This is part of a strategy to enhance local coaching capabilities.

Häuptle focused on tactical drills, fluid ball movement, and team cohesion in her first session with the Copper Queens.

Jiangsu Wuxi midfielder Ireen Lungu and Galatasaray Striker Xiomara Mapepa lent the squad a wealth of international experience, while Häuptle assessed the young talent and fine-tuned the team’s strategies for the crucial matches ahead.

The two FIFA international friendly matches against the Scorchers of Malawi, scheduled for February 22 and 25, are critical for Häuptle as she seeks to establish her coaching philosophy and build team momentum ahead of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in July.

Last week, Häuptle announced a 30-player provisional roster of local talent in anticipation of the friendlies. This squad includes the top 10 scorers from the Eden University Women’s Super League, notably ZESCO Ndola Girls’ striker Penelope Mulubwa, who has scored an impressive 25 goals in 23 matches this season.

Promising youngsters Mwila Mufunte and Namute Chileshe, both alumni of the U17 national team, have received their first senior team call-ups.

They are joined by Copper Princesses captain Mercy Chipasula and forward Ruth Mukoma, who add significant experience and leadership to the team.
