HH launches $500 million Lumwana Mine expansion
In a landmark event for Zambia's mining industry, President Hakainde Hichilema presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the Lumwana Mine Super Pit expansion project in Kalumbila District.
The $500 million investment by Barrick Lumwana marks a significant boost to the country's copper production capabilities.
The expansion project is set to create over 3,000 jobs during construction, with an additional 1,500 permanent positions once operational. It includes substantial infrastructure development and the implementation of cutting-edge mining technologies.
“This is a momentous occasion that reflects our ongoing progress in building a robust, globally competitive mining industry,” President Hichilema said. “Copper is rapidly becoming a critical mineral on the world stage, and this project ensures that Zambia remains a key player.” He also expressed gratitude to Barrick Lumwana for its commitment to the project.
The President's one-day working visit to the North-Western Province also included meetings with traditional leaders and a public rally in Manyama, where he engaged with local residents.
This development underscores the Zambian government's focus on leveraging its mineral resources to drive economic growth and create employment opportunities in the region.
