Kitwe City Council to Pay Retirees Following Mopani Copper Mines Settlement
Kitwe City Council will distribute payments to its retirees this week after Mopani Copper Mines agreed to settle its outstanding debt of K87 million to the local authority. This decision comes after Mopani successfully cleared the debt accumulated since 2021.
Patrick Kambita, Kitwe Town Clerk, confirmed the imminent payments to retirees and the council's intention to fulfil its statutory obligations, including payments to institutions like the National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA).
Mr. Kambita said that revenue from Mopani's activities will be put toward improving service delivery in Kitwe as well as allowing the city to fund additional infrastructure projects such as road and street light upgrades.
Rokana Ward Councillor Macmillian Mbao praised President Hichilema's updated mining policies, saying that Mopani's settlement reflects their effectiveness.
Councillors are pushing for further investment in essential equipment, such as earthmovers, to improve the lives of residents.
