ZGC approves K42m budget for Kasenseli Mine reopening

Zambia Gold Company (ZGC) has given the green light to a K42 million for remedial works at the Kasenseli Gold Mine in Mwinilunga District, North Western Province. The move paves the way for the mine's reopening following its suspension by the government in 2021 due to a spate of fatalities linked to illegal mining activities.

Guy Phiri, Chairperson of the ZGC Board of Directors, announced that the mine is expected to be fully operational by September of this year. "We anticipate creating about 500 jobs once the mine is fully operational, with a strong focus on local employment," Phiri said.

The decision to relaunch operations comes after extensive discussions with the Chibwika Royal Establishment, aimed at finding ways to involve the local community in mining activities. This collaborative approach is hoped to address previous concerns and foster a more sustainable mining environment.

The Kasenseli Gold Mine, located in a mineral-rich region of Zambia, has been a focal point for economic development in the area. Its reopening is expected to boost the local economy whilst implementing stricter safety measures to prevent the recurrence of past tragedies.

As Zambia continues to diversify its mining sector beyond copper, the revitalisation of gold mining operations in Mwinilunga could mark a significant step towards harnessing the country's varied mineral resources.
