30 Million USD Copper and Cobalt mine to open in Mufulira

A 30 million United States Dollar Copper and Cobalt Mine is poised to open in Mufulira District in the Copperbelt Province.

Chilibwe Mine, which has an anticipated lifespan of 10 years, will be situated off the Ndola-Mufulira road. The mine covers 20 hectares of land and is expected to produce 2000 metric tonnes of copper and cobalt per month. The Mine is another example of HH’s drive to increase copper production to 3 million tonnes per annum by 2032.

In a recent scoping meeting held in Mufulira District, the mine's management engaged key stakeholders to address the project's potential environmental and social impacts. Norton Munkondya, Chilibwe Mine’s general, said

Taneili Kamanga, Mufulira mayor, urged the mine management to ensure the welfare of displaced residents. ‘We want the people who are displaced to start benefitting immediately..they need to give something to the people for free’, said the mayor.

The mine will offer employment opportunities in the local area, starting with the employment of 500 people at the opening with the promise of increased employment as the mine expands. Investments like this will also increase revenues for public services, benefit local communities, and create opportunities for local businesses.
