Fake Teacher Jailed For Failing To Pay K60,000 Fine

A woman who posed as a teacher in Nakonde district, Muchinga Province, has been sent to prison by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) after failing to pay a K60,000 fine ordered by the Nakonde Magistrate’s Court in February.

The accused has been named as Catherine Nakamba, aged 30 of Muzabwela Village in Nakonde.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, ACC spokesperson Timothy Moono explained that the commission had charged Nakamba with uttering a false document and obtaining pecuniary advantage by false pretences in 2018.

Nakamba began pretending to be a teacher at some point in January 2012, having forged a teacher’s certificate and presented it to the District Education Board Secretary.

Ms Nakamba used this forgery to obtain a job paying some K184, 084.70 in total.

In February, she was handed a 12 month suspended sentence by the Nakonde Magistrate’s Court and ordered to pay a K60,000 fine within six month. Failure to do so means that she will serve six months imprisonment in the Nakonde Correctional Facility.
