SA Lottery Probed After 5,6,7,8,9 & 10 Drawn

South Africa’s national lottery has been subject to fraud allegations this week after a draw on Tuesday resulted in the winning numbers 5,6,7,8,9 & 10.

The drawing of six consecutive numbers, along with the high number of people who have won a share of the jackpot, has raised suspicion that a scam may be at play.

According to the organisers a total of 20 people had a winning ticket. With a jackpot of R113 million, the prize stood at R5.7 million rand for each winning player (K7.87 million). An additional 79 players won around R6,283 for guessing the sequence but missing the PowerBall (10).

It is uncommon for multiple players to share the jackpot. However, in March 2003, a record 33 players shared the jackpot.

Given the large number of possible combinations available to players when choosing their five balls and the additional bonus ball, or PowerBall, the chances of winning the lottery are one in 42,375,200.

An investigation into the draw is now underway, conducted by the competition's regulator, South Africa's National Lotteries Commission (NLC).
