Kanyama Constituency Gets 19 New Boreholes
In a promising development for residents of the Kanyama compound, Lusaka, a solution to daily water challenges is taking shape.
Nineteen out of twenty boreholes have been sunk since drilling started in May 2024 in Lusaka's Kanyama constituency. The boreholes aim to replace shallow wells in the area and improve access to clean water for over 4,000 residents.
The project to upgrade Kanyama’s water facilities is being funded by the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation.
Project Manager Muyakuka Kabisa says the scope of work includes the setting up of
Water kiosks in areas not connected by the Lusaka Water Supply Connection Company (LWSCC).
The water tanks providing storage for the 20 boreholes are targeted at communities without a water supply. The Company will install tanks with a 10,000-litre capacity in those selected areas.
The LWSCC Project Manager explained, “We are going into the stage of equipping the boreholes. We have already started equipping some of them, which will be operational soon. We are at the stage where we are equipping the facilities so that the residents can start benefitting.”
Meanwhile, Kanyama Member of Parliament Monty Chinkuli says improved access to clean water will help address issues of water-borne diseases, including cholera, which usually occur during the rainy season. “I want to thank the government for the initiative,” the Kanyama MP added.
