600 Receive PrEP Injection to Prevent HIV Transmission
As of March 2024, over six hundred individuals have received the HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis injection.
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective medication taken to prevent HIV transmission.
Health Minister Sylvia Masebo said she is confident that more people will have access to the medication in the near future.
Although the ministry currently faces a shortage of HIV PrEP medication, the country is expected to receive more from cooperating partners. Health centres are working to educate the public about HIV PrEP injectables.
In February, Zambia became the first country in Africa to introduce Cabotegravir Long-Acting (CAB-LA), an injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis medicine for HIV prevention, receiving almost 15,000 via a donation from the United States.
