Car in Flames After Welding Incident
A Toyota Wish with registration number BAF 1671 caught fire and was completely destroyed on Monday afternoon at around 14:00 while being welded at Chipanga Market in Chikankata District.
Maxwell Chiputa, the workshop owner, said that the fire broke out when a mechanic was in the process of welding the vehicle. It is suspected that sparks from the welding process ignited a fuel leak.
In an interview following the incident, Chiputa expressed dismay over the incident, stating that the vehicle belonged to an individual from Kafue, whose identity has not been revealed. The owner, who was visibly distraught, did not provide any comment as he watched his vehicle burn.
The incident highlights the dangers of welding near flammable materials like fuel tanks. Bystanders and nearby residents swiftly attempted to contain the fire, but the vehicle was irreparably damaged.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing. Chiputa stressed the importance of implementing strict safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. This incident serves as a warning to workshop and vehicle owners to prioritise safety during welding and maintenance work.
