World Food Programme gives Zambia additional $20 million for drought response
US Aid, in collaboration with the World Food Programme has donated $20 million to support Zambia’s drought response.
The assistance will be geared towards areas in Eastern, Western, Southern and Central provinces which have been hardest to reach. It is hoped it will benefit 512,000 individuals.
During the launch for the distribution of the aid, Vice President Nalumango called upon every Zambian to ensure that they put in effort to accompany the support given by the US to maximise its effects: “The purpose of this money is to make us strong and be able to stand on our own feet. What do we do therefore with a gift as generous as this one, is to work hard as Zambians. I call upon every Zambian to ensure that you put in your best.”
The World Food Programme County Director, Cissy Kabasuuga, said “by providing high quality seeds and facilitating access climate responsive agronomic practices, we aim to restore production capacity and enhance the resilience of vulnerable communities.”
Michael Gonzales, the US Ambassador to Zambia reiterated how this funding is another example of the strong partnership between the US and Zambia.
