Students receive loans from the Higher Education Loans and Scholarship Board

On 30 July, the Higher Education Loans and Scholarship Board (HELSB) has awarded loans to 1,457 students at Mulungushi University beginning their first year in September 2024.

The HELSB Corporate Communications and Customer Service Manager, Chiselwa Kawanda, noted that out of the awarded students, 783 were male, whilst 674 were female.

He said, “For the 2024/2025 academic year, HELSB selected applicants by regional balancing criteria to promote equitable access to education. This approach has ensured equitable distribution across provinces, with applicants from all regions considered for the award.”

The CEO of HELSB, Dr. John Machayi, explained the vision of the organisation in their recent newsletter, “our mission to provide accessible student loans to eligible Zambians is not merely a financial endeavour but a commitment to empower individuals in their pursuit of knowledge and opportunity.”

HELSB received 4,801 applications in total for the loans. And, of the students awarded, 1,167 students are enrolled in science-based programmes, whilst 290 are enrolled in arts based programmes at the university.
