Drug Stocks Rise from 12% to 70% in Livingstone

During an impromptu visit by Minister of Health Elijah Muchima to Livingstone University Teaching Hospital it has been confirmed that drug stocks at the facility have increased from 12 percent in 2020 to 70 percent in 2024.

In a report by ZANIS the Senior Medical Superintendent Kaseya Chinyenu said the improvement was the result of a consistent supply of medicines to the health facility. He also confirmed that the blood bank is currently fully stocked.

Dr. Muchima said it would be possible to increase levels further still to 100%.

The visit follows the minister’s tour of the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA) Central warehouse last week where he conducted a spot-check on the quality and shelf life of essential medicines and medical supplies. During the visit Dr. Muchima directed ZAMMSA to immediately distribute the medicines to the intended medical facilities to avoid wastage.

The Minister emphasized that the New Dawn administration requires discipline and accountability from ZAMMSA and warned that individuals with a casual attitude who are in the habit of serving their own interests risk facing disciplinary measures.
