The UPND have stated that the IBA’s decision to suspend the licences of Prime TV and other media houses seen to be critical of the government is wrong and is a blatant abuse of authority.

Charles Kakoma announced that the party has observed with sincere dismay the government’s misuse of the IBA, notably by PF Secretary General Davies Mwila and Information Minister Dora Siliya.

Mr Kakoma warned that the UPND would prosecute those at the IBA who have abused the office, he argued that in its current form they are a threat to national security and have clearly assumed a PF agenda.

“We shall soon commence legal proceedings against certain IBA officials given their known political affiliation. We wish to put it on record that all those names who have been involved in the Prime Television Station saga so far do will face the wrath of the law for abuse of public office,” he said.

The closure of Prime TV is yet another demonstrating of Zambia’s increasingly controlled media environment.
