Government Has Halted Issuance of NRCs in Dundumwezi

The UPND MP for Dundumwezi, Edgar Sing’ombe, says the government has stopped issuing National Registration Cards (NRCs) in his constituency, reportedly owing to a lack of materials.

Speaking to journalists, Mr Sing’ombe said he was first alerted to the absence of officers issuing NRCs by members of his constituency.

“I couldn’t believe it at first. I tried to find out why they were not present at the centres, only to be told that they are no materials for them to continue with the exercise.” He said.

According to Sing’ombe, thousands of voters were left waiting to receive their cards, with  over 1,000 people queuing at Nabulangu Primary School and a further 1,000 at Bilili Primary School.

The opposition MP decried that not only had the issuance of NRCs started late but now officers were leaving early over something so basic as a lack of supplies.

Meanwhile residents of Dundumwezi have accused the government of deliberately disenfranchising voters in the area, in order to assist the PF at next year’s general elections.
