Miles Sampa Launches ‘Wash Covid Away’ Campaign

Lusaka Mayor Miles Sampa has launched a new ‘Wash Covid Away’ campaign in a bid to curb the spread of the virus throughout the city.

The campaign was launched yesterday in partnership with Wash Zambia and aims to disinfect over 50 public and private spaces around the capital.

Wash Zambia have committed K1.5 million to the campaign and will also be disinfecting over 5,000 private homes in Lusaka.

Speaking at the event, Mr Sampa said the continued rise of Covid-19 cases in Zambia meant it was even more important to find ways of keeping people safe. He said disinfecting public spaces would help to avoid a full national lockdown.

“The president’s message is that he does not want to lock the country because people will suffer economically, he wants you to be very careful and follow Covid-19 guidelines.”

The initiative comes as coronavirus cases continue to rise in Zambia. Yesterday the ministry of health confirmed 1,343 new cases, bringing the total number of cases up to 31,100 since the pandemic began.

Mayor Sampa has urged Lusakans in particular to follow government guidelines, including wearing masks, maintaining distance from others and avoiding crowds. He reminded citizens that front-line health workers were risking their lives and that the general public needed to take prevention measures more seriously.
