ACC Investigating HoneyBee Pharmacy

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) says it has been investigating suspected foul play over a ministry of health contract awarded to HoneyBee Pharmacy since August 2020.

The ACC’s public relations manager Timothy Moono said a number of witnesses and suspects have been interviewed and that investigations have reached an advanced stage. He said he expected to inquiry to be concluded soon.

It follows the news that the ministry of health awarded a $17 million contract to HoneyBee for pharmaceutical supplies, despite the company failing to comply with government safety guidelines. HoneyBee was later accused of supplying defective medical equipment, including leaky condoms and latex gloves.

Health minister Chitalu Chilufya has been sacked for his involvement in the scandal, with many opposition and civil society figures calling for him to be criminally prosecuted.

In a statement on Wednesday the ACC assured Zambians it would “not relent to bring to book any persons or entities that will be found involved in the corrupt activities”.
