UPND Criticises Fr Lupupa Over Election Rigging Claims
The United Party for National Development has criticised Catholic clergyman Fr. Lastone Lupupa for his controversial sermon about the general election in August.
In a televised address from UTH chapel in Lusaka, Fr Lupupa claimed it was better to have rigged elections than for an opposition party to form a government in Zambia.
A video of the sermon has since gone viral on social media.
UPND Secretary General Stephen Katuka has criticised Fr Lupupa’s comments, warning that they risk undermining the credibility of the upcoming general election.
Mr Katuka said the priest should be preaching a message of love rather than hate. He added that it was disappointing to see a man of God become a fully fledged cadre of the Patriotic Front.
Several others have condemned Fr Lupupa’s comments, with Simon Mwewa Lane writing in the Zambian Observer: “If you are a clergyman and you are NOT an active politician … STAY AWAY FROM PARTISAN POLITICS”
