Lungu Wants To Run For Presidency With Impunity – Freedom Fighter

Jonny Musonda, a Kitwe freedom fighter, has made his thoughts clear on President Edgar Lungu’s attempt at running for a third term in office.

In a statement given to The Mast, Musonda said that lawyers should not fail to interpret article 106 (3) of the Republican constitution, which outlines laws against the possibility of Lungu running for a third term in presidency.

The article states that “a person who has held office twice as a president is not eligible for election as a president.”

Musonda said that, as a result, the constitution clearly pulls Lungu out of the race to become president in the August elections this year.

“…it knocks him out of the race. It is not talking about the period one is President. The first term of office of President Lungu, according to article 106 (6) that seeks to qualify a term of office in 1996 and 2016 is when one is elected regardless of the period, it will still be regarded as a term,” he said.

Subsequently, Musonda states that in running for presidency for a third term, he is running with disregard for the law in which he is supposed to uphold as president.

“Shockingly, President Lungu wants to continue and run for presidency with impunity, to obliterate the supreme law of the land which he swore to defend and protect according to article 9 (3) which mandates the President to respect, uphold and safeguard the constitution.”
