UPND Relaunch Major Fundraising Campaign For Final Two Weeks Before Election
The United Party for National Development has relaunched its popular ’14 by 10’ fundraising campaign to mark the final two weeks before election day on August 12th.
The campaign encourages Zambians who can to donate K10 to the UPND every day for the next 14 to help the UPND pay for the cost of logistics during the final fortnight of campaigning.
Supporters can send their contributions via Airtel money, MTN and ewallet using the numbers +260 97 6071469 or +260 97 4245015.
The opposition party is seeking to finance the final push in its re-election campaign, which includes mask distribution exercises across Zambia to help combat the spread of Covid-19.
The call for popular donations stands in stark contrast to the Patriotic Front, who last week revealed they had received large donations from unnamed businesses in order to pay the K4.488 million the party had spend on billboard advertising. The PF’s Lusaka Province chairman told reporters that the money had come from anonymous businesses after the party initially denied it had spent such large sums, raising eyebrows over possible corruption and bribery.
The UPND’s call for donations also comes amid continuing claims that the Patriotic Front is using government funding and resources to boost its campaign efforts. Earlier this month, one of the infamous 42-for-42 firetrucks (which cost the government US$1 million each) was seen erecting a PF billboard outside Mulungushi University in Central Province.
In June, Transparency International Zambia accused PF running mate Nkandu Luo of a “blatant abuse of public resources” after she accompanied republican Vice President Inonge Wina on official government trips in order to engage in campaign activities.
