UPND Continues To Crack Down On Corruption
The United Party for National Development (UPND) government continue to make steps to crack down on corruption as they focus on removing corrupt police officers from the force.
Newly appointed Inspector General Lemmy Kajoba has said that there is need to change public perception of the force, starting by removing the level of corruption currently seen amongst officers.
“We, therefore, need to change this narrative [of a corrupt police force] through transformation of individual attitudes towards work and adapt the route of professionalism,” he said.
To resolve the issue, secret agents will be deployed to monitor officers who are thought to be engaging in corrupt activities. Most of these activities occur at traffic sections, security check-points and the inquiries office according to Mr Kajoba.
To ensure citizens feel they are able to participate in anti-corruption practice, Kajoba encouraged them to report any officers found indulging in corrupt practices. The reports should be made to the individual’s supervisor or government institutions involved in anti-corruption.
Under the previous Patriotic Front government, corruption in a variety of sectors was rife, resulting in taxpayers money meant for improvement of services within the country simply went into the pockets of those in power to improve their own extravagant lifestyles.
By comparison, President Hakainde Hichilema has already carried out an exercise to remove ghost workers on government payrolls in a bid to remove corruption within the country.
