Calls To Deregister PF Undemocratic - Mweetwa

United Party for National Development spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa has dismissed calls to deregister the opposition Patriotic Front, saying this would be deeply undemocratic.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka on Monday, Mr Mweetwa said the government would not be heeding calls by some political stakeholders to deregister the PF over criminal allegations. He said such an action would be undemocratic; not to mention unfair to the many new PF members of parliament, who should not be held accountable for the crimes of others.

“We are opposed to any calls to deregister the PF. Whatever the PF did to the people of Zambia, are covered under the laws of this country and are able to be adjudicated upon by the laws of Zambia,” Mr Mweetwa said.

The UPND spokesperson also addressed anxiety around President Hakainde Hichilema’s highly-anticipated cabinet announcement, saying that the president was very careful about who he selected to work with.

He assured Zambians that “the anxiety will soon come to an end and you will not wait any longer than reasonably necessary.” An announcement is expected in the coming days ahead of HH’s inaugural address to the National Assembly on Friday.
