Government Starts Evacuating Zambians from Ukraine
President Hakainde Hichilema confirmed that the Zambian government are doing everything in their power to evacuate any Zambian citizens in Ukraine.
President Hichilema has said that the country has already started preparations for the safe removal of the 141 known Zambians in Ukraine.
On Thursday morning, a Russian invasion of Ukraine began with attacks by land, sea and air in what was immediately the largest military assault by one European state on another since World War Two.
Russian soldiers have entered the capital, Kiev, and many inhabitants are fearful for their lives.
Yesterday, Stenley Kakubo, Foreign Affairs Minister, speaking during a media briefing in Lusaka has assured that the Zambians, most of who are students, will return home safely and the government is fully committed in making this happen.
Mr. Kakubo also stated that Zambia will maintain its position on the issue by supporting the international community's diplomatic peace efforts.
